Year 4 September 2020

Welcome to Year 4!

Hello! We are super excited to welcome you into Year 4. We know that things might feel and be a bit different since you were last at Colman but we will be here to guide you through coming back to school and making sure you feel comfortable and happy.

Here is a PowerPoint to show you all of the things that will stay the same next year as well as a few things that might be different too.

We have lots of cool things to look forward to when we come back in September and we can’t wait to get going teaching you!

Our first topic is all about three different civilisations that decided they liked Great Britain and invaded this country: The Romans, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings! We are going to look at why and how they invaded, what they did to change the country when they settled and how they lived. We will be able to explore a variety of things they made, such as impressive ships, dangerous weapons and awesome architecture.

Here are a few websites to visit if you’d like to find out a bit more about these incredible civilisations before we start school:

Romans · https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/ancient-rome/ · https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqtf34j

Anglo-Saxons · https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/anglo-saxons/ · https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/history/general-history/anglo-saxons/

Vikings · https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/vikings/ · https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zvhtwnb

The following term, we’ll be learning all about the continent of North America, before our final magical topic focusing on Harry Potter and his adventures with his friends at Hogwarts.

You will now know who your teachers are for next year so get to know us a bit by reading about us below:

4LK

Hello! My name is Mr Keeler and I will be your new class teacher for Year 4. I’m so excited to be teaching Year 4 because I know what fantastic activities we get up to! We’ll also have Mrs Brown in class with us every day to help us along with our learning.

Just so you guys get to know a little bit more about me I actually used to work at Colman, in Year 3! So, in a way, we will all be transitioning from Year 3 to Year 4 together! I really love history and it is one of my favourite subjects. I’m so excited to learn more about the Vikings and the Romans together because they had some really cool weapons and inventions like shields, ships and even roads! We even get to visit some of our own local history in the Norwich Castle! A fun fact that some of you may not know, but the Norwich Castle actually appears on my favourite football team’s badge! I’ll give you three guesses which team that might be!

I am a huge sports fan and particularly love football and golf. The football season was moved back a few months this year which means the European Championships have been moved to next year which I am really excited about! I also love music and love playing the piano and the guitar! You can be sure that we will take every opportunity we get to share and enjoy music together in Year 4!

We will have a Zoom session together on Thursday the 16th of July. This will just be a chance for us to all say hello face to face and for you to ask any questions you might have about what kind of things we will be doing together in Year 4!

Hi everyone, Mrs Henery here! I’m going to be working in 4LK on Fridays. This is me and Mrs Mitchell enjoying Hilltop thi s year. Hilltop is definitely a highlight of Year 4 and we’ll hopefully be able to visit next year - check out their website if you want to see the kind of activities they do: https://www.hilltopoutdoorcentre.co.uk

I enjoy travelling and exploring new places; spending time with my family and playing sport. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all and am especially looking forward to Big Writes on a Friday morning and swimming and games in the afternoon.

4SH

Hi 4SH! My name is Mr Stehr and I’ll be teaching you all on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays next year. I’m looking forward to meeting you all on our Zoom to get to know you a bit more and cannot wait to have you all in the classroom. Miss Copland will also be in class with us to help us with our learning, who you will already know.

This is my second year at Colman Junior School, just like you! I’ve had a great first year at the school and I can tell you that being in Year 4 is great fun. There are so many things to look forward!

Like Mr Keeler in 4LK, I absolutely love history and cannot wait to start our learning in September beginning with the Romans. I love going to museums to explore our past and seeing how life was different but also so similar in a number of ways. I also really enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes and can’t wait to do some cooking with you at school in some of our DT lessons.

In my free time, I like going to the beach and the zoo (that’s a snake I’m holding), reading books and watching programs about science fiction and bouldering (rock climbing). I am also a big fan of Norwich City, and try to go to as many football matches as I can!

Our Zoom session together is on Wednesday the 15th July, and I can’t wait to see all your faces then. You’ll get a chance to ask some questions about all the fun things we’ll get to experience next year and we’ll all get to know each other a bit better before we see each other in September.

Hi everyone! I’m Ms Hughes and I’ll be teaching you on Thursdays and Fridays. I’ve been teaching at Colman Junior School for about 13 years now and think this is the best school ever! I spent 8 years teaching in Year 3 and then 1 year teaching in Year 5. This slightly unusual year has been my 3rd year in Year 4 and so I have a lot of experience teaching around this age and I love it!

I can’t wait to catch up with you in our Zoom meeting and start putting some of your names to your faces. Usually, we’d have had some time to get to know each other for a while before you make the leap up into Year 4 (the best year ever!) but this will be a good start.

As well as loving working with children, I have two totally awesome grandchildren – one is just 2 years old and the other will be 4 in November. I adore spending time playing and going out with them. Other than that, I love to go on long bike rides and have started running again during lockdown, so I am feeling much fitter than I have for a long time. I also like going to see bands playing and walking in nature. Nature plays a huge part in my life and I really interested all things wild!
