Forest School

New for September 2022

“Forest School is a child-centred, inspirational learning process that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner-inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.”
– Forest Schools Association

At Colman, our four afternoons a week Forest School is an intervention that utilises our on-site wildlife garden as an outside classroom. Having a Forest School that operates so regularly allows us to offer children bespoke timetables based on their need and engagement. We aim to build on skills that cover social, emotional, intellectual and physical experiences that encourage a practical relationship and engagement with nature and the outside world. We explore and expand our understanding of risk by measuring, protecting and overcoming risks, building resilience, confidence, creativity and independence in the process.

Our Forest School activities such as rope-swings, field games and den building encourage play and exploration while our more structured activities such as fire-making, cooking and using tools develop tangible and meaningful real-world skills.
